Riverfly Partnership Training - Empowering Citizens to Protect their Rivers

Sun 12 Apr 2026 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Ribble Rivers Trust offices, BB7 4QF

This event is for anyone wants to take part in the Riverfly Monitoring citizen science scheme - a national initiative to conserve and protect our watercourses across the UK though monitoring populations of river invertebrates (https://www.riverflies.org/).

The event will be run by Ribble Rivers Trust's qualified riverfly instructor and is restricted to 12 people in line with the Riverfly Partnership guidelines, so early booking is essential! Once trained, attendees will be asked if they would like to carry out monthly monitoring at their own personal site (which we'll help you to choose) to understand the biological health of our rivers and detect pollution events (a monitoring session typically takes 1-2 hours).

Course Content:

  • Introduction to the Riverfly Partnership - Why is collecting Riverfly invertebrate data important?
  • Riverfly invertebrates as indicators of water and habitat quality
  • Identification techniques for the key 8 groups of invertebrates
  • Practical - Invertebrate sampling practice from the River Ribble at West Bradford Bridge (this requires a short walk and entering the river)
  • Practical - Invertebrate identification

You will need to bring a packed lunch, weather appropriate clothing, and wellington boots or waders. All other equipment will be provided. Hot and cold drinks will be available throughout the day. If you have any questions please get in touch at volunteering@ribbletrust.com or call 01200 444452.

Please note that depending on the weather and other factors, we may finish slightly earlier than 4:00pm.
